Winter Returns for the Weekend

by Dave Hennen
CNN Senior Meteorologist

As much of Europe continues to be in the deep freeze, most of the U.S. continued to bask in abnormally warm weather.  Another week and another 222 record high temperature records set from coast to coast.  Since February 1st  the total number of record highs is approaching 400.

From NOAA: Red dots indicating record high temperatures since Feb 1st.

A report out from NOAA shows much lower than average ice coverage over the Great Lakes.  Lake Erie which is shallower than the other Great Lakes is typically completed ice-covered by this time in the year.  This year only the far western part of the lake has solid ice cover.

From iReporter Becky Hull along the shores of Lake Huron showing a lack of ice cover

This warm pattern will abruptly end this weekend as a strong cold front pushes towards the Eastern Seaboard, allowing arctic air to make a return.
